chiffren, which means ciphers in German, is a project devoted to promoting contemporary music and putting it across to listeners. The project also organizes a biennial festival of New Music in Kiel entitled “chiffren – kieler tage für neue musik”. 

Through a wide range of additional concerts and projects chiffren opens up new paths leading into unfamiliar auditory territory and allowing people to discover music in a novel way.  

chiffren stimulates musical creativity in children and young people and offers gifted young musicians the chance to distinguish themselves early on. chiffren motivates regional ensembles and artists to become engaged with novel forms of music. chiffren aims to create space for the musical potential in the region and to support aspiring artists in their development. In cooperation with its partners, chiffren is in the process of realizing a forward-looking network for contemporary art music.  

The supporting organization of chiffren is the Forum für zeitgenössische Musik e.V., a registered non-profit association.
